East of the Royal Citadel Barbican is the oldest surviving area of Plymouth. Here, houses and warehouses in Tudor rose of a maze of narrow streets that descend to the fishing docks and port. Many of these buildings have become book-stores, antique shops and art. It’s worth a walk. Places of interest include the National Marine Aquarium in Barbican is one of the largest aquariums in the UK and has one of the deepest tank in Europe; Elizabethan House, an old house built in the early sixteenth century, now used as a museum, Mayflower Steps near the place where the pilgrims on the Mayflower in 1620, and Robert Lenkiewicz gallery eccentric painter who lived and Barbican worked in years. Barbican also contains a variety of shops and businesses – including Barbican Theatre, art galleries, retail, Plymouth Gin Distillery, Dolphin Inn, and numerous bars and eating places.
